At this year’s Youth Academy in September, curious students turned into space detectives during the workshop “Introduction to Micrometeorites,” organised by the Department for Gifted Education at the State School Office for the Bergstraße and Odenwald regions in Germany.

Students get a feel for real scientific investigation as they try to find examples of micrometeorites in everyday dust collected outside

Led by expert Christopher Brinkmann, students explored the origins and composition of micrometeorites—tiny visitors from space hidden in everyday dust. Equipped with magnets and microscopes, participants sifted through their own samples, uncovering potential cosmic particles and getting hands-on experience with scientific investigation.

Beyond the lab work, the workshop offered inspiring insights into astronomy, geology, and research methods—highlighting how young people can contribute to real science. The workshop was proudly supported by FTP-Europlanet, one of the partners in the EU Erasmus+ project StAnD – Students As Planetary Defenders.
